Jail-Based Behavioral Health Medications
Effective July 1, 2026, the Iowa Primary Care Association (Iowa PCA), serving as Iowa’s Behavioral Health Administrative Services Organization, implemented new requirements for reimbursement of behavioral health (BH) medications administered within Iowa’s jails. A Preferred Drug List (PDL) has been established to standardize medications that are routinely reimbursable. Medications not included on the PDL are eligible for reimbursement when the Behavioral Health Medication Exception Request (BH-MER) process is followed and program requirements are met.
The Iowa PCA hosted an Information and Q&A Session on June 24, 2026, which provided an overview of the PDL, BH-MER process, invoicing requirements, and other key program details.
